एपी की रपट में लिखा हैः- Public anger with corruption has been growing in the wake of recent scandals, including an investigation into the sale of cell phone spectrum in 2008 that reportedly cost the country tens of billions of dollars in lost revenue. The telecoms minister had to resign and is currently in jail pending a probe into the losses.

Corruption has long been a serious problem within the Indian government. In 2008, The Washington Post reported that nearly a fourth of the 540 Indian Parliament members faced criminal charges, “including human trafficking immigration rackets, embezzlement, rape, and even murder.” In 2010, Transparency International found India to be the ninth-most corrupt country in the world, with 54 percent of Indians having paid a bribe in the past year.

But Hazare’s protest is particularly timely in a year in which three major corruption scandals rocked the Indian government, the scandals prompting even the stoic Supreme Court to ask: “What the hell is going on in this country?”

Tens of thousands also joined the protests, ranging from hunger strikes to candlelit vigils in cities around the country including Mumbai, Lucknow and Jaipur. A number of Bollywood stars have also come out in support of Hazare, a former soldier and veteran social activist.

Even the western financial press, unwaveringly gung-ho about the money to be made in India, is getting restless. Early this year, the Economist asked: "Is Indian capitalism becoming oligarchic?" – a question to which the only correct response is "Hell-ooo". Recently in the Financial Times' Indian business dynasties have been described as"robber barons".

There are many more dramatic revelations in store from WikiLeaks and The Hindu; these are tense days and nights for many politicians, business people and journalists. They probably hope the bad news is buried by the cricket World Cup celebrations.
